“In the 90's, when my first son traveled to Sweden, I got very sick. I had to go to the doctor. When he asked me why I was so sad, I started crying. He wiped my tears and reminded me that my son went to live a better life away from the war so that he could support me and his siblings. We didn’t have phones back then so I used my neighbor’s to talk to him. I took medicine for my sickness and it wascured, but it never cured my heartache. Now that my children are leaving for Germany for a better future, I’ve learned that the best I can do is to pray for them and my grandchildren’s new found happiness. Me? Oh, I could never leave Syria. I am too used to life here.”

“I have ten children and I loved raising them more than anything else. It was like having a wedding celebration every day because of all the noise and laughter. Now I feel alone at home, it’s just me and the walls of the empty apartment.”
